Vibration Analysis Machinery Inspection and Evaluation - Level I

Introduction

Performing Condition Monitoring inspections with Vibration is a cost-effective approach to preventing unplanned downtime and improving equipment efficiencies. Vibration is a key condition monitoring inspection tool and training is paramount to establishing an effective program with a fast return-on-investment and long term results.

VIB1 is a 5-day course including the optional 1⁄2 day review and exam. It is intended for those with limited vibration experience and provides an introduction to the fundamentals of performing vibration analysis within a condition monitoring program and how to collect learn how to collect good quality, repeatable data. Students are exposed to introductory theory and how it is applied to the inspection disciplines demanded by an effective vibration program. Various techniques used to diagnose machinery conditions are reviewed with an introduction to time waveforms, spectral analysis, phase measurements, and amplitude measurement methods.

Objectives

    • The importance of condition monitoring techniques for improving plant reliability
    • CM technology Overview: acoustic emission, infrared thermography, oil analysis, wear particle analysis, motor testing
    • Basic principles of vibration measurement and how to analyze vibration spectra, time waveform, the spectrum, units, phase
    • How vibration measurements indicate machine condition
    • Operate portable instrumentation on pre-assigned or pre-programmed routes
    • How to collect valid and repeatable measurement data; prevent or control poor data
    • What Fmax, resolution, averaging and other analyzer settings mean
    • Basic fault diagnosis: unbalance, misalignment, looseness, rolling element bearings faults, resonance, and other conditions
    • Evaluate and report test results in accordance with instructions; highlight areas for further investigation

Training Methodology

This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations.

Who Should Attend?

Millwrights, Vibration Analysts, Reliability Professionals, Maintenance Supervisors, Engineers, Maintenance Managers, Team Leaders, and anyone involved in the maintenance of plant machinery. This is an ideal starting place for the new vibration analyst, people collecting vibration data, and those who want a better understanding of vibration analysis and condition monitoring. As well, if you are on the CM Inspection Team using other inspection technologies like Infrared Thermography, Ultrasound, etc. and want to gain an understanding of Vibration, this course is for you. It will provide all you need to better understand the capabilities of the technology and assist you and management to integrate, improve and streamline the Condition Monitoring Program.

Course Outline

This Course introduces the concepts of Condition-Based Maintenance, with an emphasis on the use of machinery vibration to determine machine health. You will gain an understanding of vibration as it relates to machine condition and how vibrations can be successfully measured and analyzed to provide an early warning of a wide range of fault conditions. This will not make you an expert; you will need experience and advanced courses for this, but you will know enough to implement a program at your site, and/or make a valuable contribution to this existing program in your facility.
