Operation and Maintenance of Lifting Equipment

Introduction

This course study, analysis and interpret the failure and/or misuse of lifting equipment which have the potential to cause serious personal injury, significant damage to property and loss of time and money. Failure of any load-bearing part of any lifting equipment is reportable to the Health and Safety Executive as a Dangerous Occurrence under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations.The failure and/or misuse of lifting equipment are to a large extent preventable, and to proactively manage the risks associated with the purchase, storage and use of lifting equipment and lifting accessories. With regard to lifting equipment and lifting accessories, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations to:

  • Ensure that lifting operations are planned, supervised and carried out in a safe manner by people who are competent;
  • Provide lifting equipment and accessories that are suitable, stable and have sufficient strength;
  • Mark Safe Working Loads [SWL] on lifting equipment and accessories; and
  • Thoroughly examine and inspect lifting equipment and accessories and keep reports of these examinations and any defects that are found.

Objectives

    By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

    • Outline the basics of lifting equipment safety
    • List the types and applications of mobile lift equipment including forklifts and mobile cranes
    • Outline the types and applications of mobile lifting equipment
    • Discuss the issues of forklifts and truck cranes stability
    • Describe the principle of operation of various stability monitoring systems used in modern forklifts and truck cranes
    • List and explain the application of forklift attachments and the lifting tackles
    • Inspect the lifting tackles including wire ropes, synthetic slings, clips, hooks, sockets, eyebolts, and hoist rings
    • Apply a standard inspection procedure on truck cranes and write the relevant report
    • Explain how to maintain the forklifts and truck cranes

Training Methodology

This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations.
