Patient Safety in Hospitals International Standards

Introduction

This course provides an introduction to the science of safety, and how it relates to problems with patient safety in health care. Discussions will include the role of both individual health care workers, and systems in improving patient safety and institutional responses to adverse events, including the topics of quality improvement, risk management, and infection control. The course will emphasize the importance of communication and teamwork. Participants will learn the basics of conducting an incident investigation, gain an understanding of the advantages and limitations of error reporting, learn how to disclose errors and adverse events, become familiar with models for improving safety in hospitals and other health care organizations, as well as methods for improving and evaluating safety. All participants enrolled in this course will be evaluated for receipt of the certificate of participation based on class participation. This interactive session will provide insights into the WHO patient safety programs and invaluable advice for the region.

Objectives

    This course is highly interactive and includes group discussions, case studies, and syndicate work. It also includes practical exercises that will allow all participants to improve their skills in implementing Hospitals International Standards measures that ensure patient safety.

Training Methodology

This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies, and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations. The online course is conducted online using MS-Teams/ClickMeeting.
