OSHA Scaffold Competent Person Training

Introduction

Each year, more than 60 workers are killed by falls from scaffolds in the USA, 1 in 5 of the fatal falls in construction. Besides problems with planks and guardrails, the main causes of injuries and deaths on scaffolds are poor planning for assembling and taking them apart, missing tie-ins or bracing, loads that are too heavy, and being too close to power lines. Also, falling objects can hurt people below scaffolds.

OSHA – the USA says a competent person must inspect a scaffold before each work shift and after anything happens that could affect the structure. The competent person should be trained in scaffold safety. A competent person must supervise if a scaffold is assembled, changed, moved, or taken apart. This training course will provide participants with the essential knowledge and skills to become scaffold competent persons as requested by OSHA.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the course each participant shall:

    • Inspect a scaffold and determine if it has been built according to OSHA regulations and manufacturer’s guidelines.
    • Identify that scaffold is unsafe, determine what repairs need to be made, or remove any scaffolds from service that do not meet OSHA requirements or manufacturer’s guidelines.
    • Train employees and instruct others on the proper use of a scaffold in accordance with OSHA regulations.
    • This training will meet the requirements for OSHA Competent Person for scaffold inspection.
